What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that diagnoses and treats improper positioning of the teeth and jaws, such as gapped teeth, crooked teeth, bite misalignment. Treatment may include traditional orthodontics like metal braces or newer alternatives like Invisalign. These options are tried, tested, and trusted orthodontic solutions to straighten your teeth and give you a more beautiful and healthier smile.

Protect Your Smile

Orthodontic treatment can provide many oral health benefits to both younger patients and adults. By closing the spaces between teeth, pockets between gums and teeth are minimized, reducing the risk of plaque buildup, cavities, and periodontal disease. Orthodontics can also help the jaws to meet properly, preventing uneven wear, breaking, and chipping.

Protect Your Health

Protruding teeth that result from a misaligned bite can leave you or your child at a higher risk for injury. Misalignment can also affect digestion and nutrition because it can interfere with your ability to chew properly. By trusting your orthodontic care to a specialist like Dr. Hulme or Dr. Ray, you can experience maximum benefits from treatment.

I don’t even know what to say! The level of expertise and compassion and care is seriously unsurpassed. I have a complex case...But Dr. Huelme and the staff- Brenda and Rachel- made me feel so comfortable and like they’d tackle it all with me not like it’s their job, but as if I were a friend or something! It’s that level of care. :) I have never had an experience like this at any other dentist, ortho, etc. Cannot recommend enough.

Dr Hulme came highly recommended by both my dentist and dental hygienist. For almost 2 years now he has seen my daughter through a palate expander and braces. Dr Hulme is very knowledgeable, he's also very friendly, and he and his staff have been so flexible and understanding throughout this whole process. I'd definitely recommend him to others.

We Offer Several Types of Braces So You Can Choose Your Favorite

Traditional braces rely on metal brackets and wires to move teeth into the proper position. This treatment option is typically recommended for patients with complex bite issues or moderate to severe misalignment, and the timeline for most patients is one to three years.

We also offer ceramic braces that use clear brackets to make treatment more discreet while providing the same level of bite correction.

For both types of braces, we use an advanced wire with greater elasticity than the traditional hardware. This results in a more comfortable treatment that only requires a checkup every six weeks.

How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Metal brackets are fixed to the teeth with dental cement. An archwire is threaded through the centers of the brackets to exert pressure on the teeth and jaws, guiding them into proper alignment. Rubber bands can be attached to the brackets to exert greater pressure, which can be helpful in more complex cases. The archwire will loosen over time, so every four to six weeks, you'll visit one of our six offices in the San Antonio area so your orthodontist can replace it with a new one that keeps treatment running smoothly.

This young man from Stone Oak struggled with a severe crossbite and crookedness, as well as some improperly descended teeth. His issues were so complex that most of his back teeth didn't touch when biting, which made eating very difficult. Our orthodontists fit him with a set of traditional braces, and despite the depth of his orthodontic concerns, he completed treatment in less than two years. He's thrilled to now have a smile he feels confident in, both in terms of appearance and function.

For More Discreet Orthodontic Care, Consider Clear Aligners from Invisalign

A favorite among teens and adults, the Invisalign system uses a series of customized clear aligners to achieve a straighter smile. Treatment takes about 12–18 months on average, and you'll switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks or so.

Invisalign offers a number of benefits over traditional orthodontic options. The aligners are nearly invisible, offer greater comfort, and because they are removable, you can still eat all of your favorite foods. Invisalign treatment is also approximately 25% more effective than the standard approach.

However, Invisalign does have limitations as to the amount of correction it can offer. It may not be the best option for patients with severe misalignment.

This woman came from Leon Springs for a second opinion from our orthodontists. Her dentist told her that she wasn't able to undergo treatment with Invisalign because of her overbite. Our orthodontists thought differently. We were able to help her successfully complete a course of Invisalign to close gaps between her teeth and bring her bite into better alignment. We're proud to have helped her achieve the beautiful smile she wanted.

How to Get the Best Results From Your Treatment in San Antonio

Here are three fundamental ways that patients can get the most from their orthodontic treatments:

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

It is important to continue brushing twice and flossing at least once each day throughout your treatment. Our orthodontists can show you how to properly care for your teeth and gums if you're wearing traditional braces. We may recommend you use floss threaders or interdental brushes for the most effective cleaning.

Avoid Certain Foods

Sticky and hard foods like bubblegum, popcorn, and certain meats are not recommended for patients wearing traditional braces. It is important that you do not eat foods that can bend or get stuck in the wires and brackets of your braces.

Wear a Retainer After Treatment

Your teeth will want to revert back to their original positions after your orthodontic treatment is complete. You can prevent this by wearing a retainer. We'll provide one for you at the end of your treatment and let you know when you should use it based on your unique case.

Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt?

Traditional wire braces can be slightly uncomfortable as you initially get used to them or after an adjustment appointment. Patients sometimes use orthodontic wax or cold compresses to help soothe any areas of irritation.

Invisalign can also be a bit uncomfortable to wear at first. There may be some soreness as your mouth adjusts to the aligners, but your orthodontist will check to make sure the aligners do not rub against your gums or the insides of your cheeks. You can take over-the-counter medication to help manage any pain as you adjust to a new aligner.

If you experience significant discomfort for long periods of time, contact our greater San Antonio, TX, dental offices immediately so we can examine your gums and teeth.

Is There an Age Limit
for Orthodontic Treatment?

Not at all! It is never too late to straighten your teeth, improve your oral health, and achieve the smile you've always dreamed of. If you're an adult who's put off by the idea of traditional metal braces, we can help you explore discreet orthodontic solutions like Invisalign and ceramic braces.

We Focus on Orthodontic Care To Give You the Best Possible Results

By focusing solely on orthodontic care, Dr. Hulme and Dr. Ray are able to customize braces and Invisalign treatment to your unique dental needs. During your appointment, you will meet one of our orthodontists within five minutes of your arrival.

As board-certified specialists who have seven years of specialty training, our orthodontists can also handle complex cases that other practices cannot. We have six offices in the greater San Antonio, TX, area to make our specialty services accessible to you.
